Performance venues in the United Kingdom were formally ordered to close on Friday 20 March 2020 to help tackle coronavirus even though most had taken the decision to close a few days earlier following government advice that people should avoid such venues.

As lockdown gradually eased, venues in England* were allowed to re-open from Saturday 4 July 2020, but not for live performances. Where audiences could be socially distanced, some live outdoor performances were allowed from Saturday 11 July 2020. Live indoor performances were permitted from Saturday 15 August 2020 with performers and audiences having to comply with strict guidelines.

theatres, however, remained closed, citing the economic realities of performing to significantly reduced socially distanced audiences. Theatres typically need at least 70% of seats to be filled in order to break even and compliance with government regulations meant they could not achieve anything like that figure.
